Barbara May Smythers – Painter

Barbara May Smythers

Barbara May SmythersAfter graduating from Duke University and while teaching Latin in the Virginia public school system, Barbara began to pursue her real passion…art. Barbara enjoys painting the Florida scenes she has come to know and love, but she also paints portraits as well. Working in oil, watercolor, pastels and mixed media, she studied with such nationally known teachers as John Brady, Florence Thomas, Ray Yoder and Charles McCurry of the Ringling School of Art. In the summer of 1978, she studied painting and drawing at the Slade School of Art in London.

Barbara is a signature member of the American Impressionist Society, and she has received numerous awards.

“In the business of everyday life, logic often dominates. I believe that art should hint at the mystery that underpins all of life. It should speak the language of the heart. To paint is to co-create with God.”
