Debbie Bowes McElwain, a true Melbourne native graduated from EGHS and has made Melbourne/Eau Gallie her home ever since. She and her husband Stan married shortly after high school and have one daughter, Shannon, and two grandchildren who also live in Melbourne. Debbie, as well as being a founding member of the Art & Antique Studio & Gallery, is part owner of Lighthouse Realty at 812 Palmetto Ave. in Melbourne.
Ten years ago, she signed up for a beginning watercolor class with Mary Agrusa and then went on to take classes with Therese Ferguson. Painting has been an enjoyable past time ever since. “I like the way the paint flows and the rich colors you get with this medium. I only wish I had more time to paint,” Debbie says. Debbie had never painted before other than spending time painting with her two grandchildren.
Still a member of the Gallery, she oversees all of the antique furniture and glassware that is in the Gallery. This has been a passion for many years passed on from her mother who was also an antique collector. When the Gallery was first forming, they wanted it to have a different look from the typical white wall galleries that you usually see. The idea came up to have antique furniture and colored walls so the artwork would be portrayed more in a home setting and that is where Debbie came in to furnish the Gallery with tables and cabinets. This is a role that she has enjoyed for the past nine years.
